Q

Describe the process of Aerobic Respiration:

A

• You get the oxygen needed for respiration from the air you breathe.
• You receive the glucose you need from the food you consume.
• The glucose is then broken down.
• Blood carries it to your cells, where respiration can occur in the powerhouse of the cell, the “mitochondria”.
• Special protein molecules called enzymes will enable a series of chemical reactions take place that react glucose and oxygen.
• The reaction transfers energy from its chemical energy store in glucose to another chemical energy store for all processes in the cell.
• This energy store is called ATP.

Q

What are the three main reasons energy is used for?

A

• Synthesising larger molecules from smaller ones to make new cell material. Plants use sugars, nitrates, and other nutrients to make amino acids and use those to form proteins.
• For movement - animals use ATP to contract muscle cells enabling the organism to move.
• To stay warm - when an animal’s surroundings are colder than they are, they increase their rate of respiration. This transfers more energy by heating, so that they can keep their body at a constant temperature.

Q

When does Aerobic Respiration occur?

A

Aerobic respiration occurs all the time in plant and animal cells. This provides the organism with a constant supply of energy.

Q

Where does Aerobic Respiration occur?

A

Respiration takes place inside the mitochondria of a cell.
Each chemical reaction that happens is controlled by a specific enzyme.

Q

Is Aerobic Respiration endothermic or exothermic? And why?

A

During the process of respiration energy is transferred to the surroundings by heating. This means that respiration is an exothermic reaction.
