Aerobic Capacity Flashcards
Define aerobic capacity
The ability of the body to inspire, transport and utilise oxygen to perform sustained periods of aerobic activity
Define VO2 Max
The maximum amount of oxygen inspired, transported and utilised per minute during exhaustive exercise
What is VO2 Max measured in?
Millilitres per kilogram per minute
ML/KG/MIN
What are the 4 factors affecting VO2 Max?
Physiological makeup
Age
Gender
Training
What effect does physiological makeup have on VO2 Max?
Greater efficiency of cardiovascular and respiratory systems and muscle cells means better intake, transport and utilisation of oxygen
What effect does age have on VO2 Max?
After early 20’s, VO2 Max declines due to loss of elasticity of blood vessels and lung tissue walls
How does gender effect VO2 Max?
Females have a lower VO2 Max as the have a higher fat percentage and smaller lung volumes on average
What effect does training have on VO2 Max?
Aerobic training causes increased strength of respiratory muscles and myoglobin and mitochondria which increases the efficiency to inspire, transport and utilise oxygen
What are the 4 tests for VO2 Max?
Direct gas analysis
Cooper 12 minute run
Harvard step test
Multi stage fitness test
