Q

What is the energy that is released during respiration used by and for?

A

By the organism
For:
To build larger molecules from smaller ones
In animals, to enable muscles to contrac
In mammies and birds, to maintains a steady body temperature in colder surroundings
In plants, to build up sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids which are then built up into proteins

Q

What do muscles store?

A

Glycogen (a chemical), which can then be converted back to glucose when your blood sugar is low or during exercise. It can then be converted back into glycogen

Q

When does anaerobic respiration take place?

A

During exercise, if insufficient oxygen is reaching the muscles they use anaerobic respiration to obtain energy

Q

What is anaerobic respiration?

A

It is the incomplete breakdown of glucose and produces lactic acid.
As the breakdown of glucose is incomplete, much less energy is released than during arp erotic respiration. Anaerobic respiration results in an oxygen dept that has to be repaid in order to oxidise lactic acid to carbon dioxide and water

Q

When do muscles become fatigued?

A

If muscles are subjected to long periodsd of vigorous activity
i.e. they stop contracting efficiently
Once cause of muscle fTigue is the build up of lactic acids in the muscle. Blood flowing through the muscle removes the lactic acid
