Aerobic & Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is the definition of respiration?
The process of transferring energy from glucose, which goes on in every cell.
What is the difference between respiration and breathing?
Breathing is a mechanical process, whereas respiration is not.
Where does respiration occur?
In the mitochondria.
Is respiration exothermic or endothermic?
Exothermic- it transfers energy to the environment.
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration using oxygen.
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen –> Carbon Dioxide and Water.
What does aerobic respiration go on in: plants, animals, or both?
Both.
How do organisms use energy from respiration?
- to build up larger molecules from smaller molecules.
- to allow their muscles to contract.
- to maintain body temperature.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen.
What is the main different between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
One process is with oxygen and the other does not use oxygen.
What is the product of anaerobic respiration?
Lactic acid.
What is the word equation of anaerobic respiration?
Glucose –> Lactic Acid
Does anaerobic respiration transfer as much energy as aerobic respiration? Yes or No? Why?
Anaerobic respiration does not transfer as much energy as aerobic respiration since the glucose isn’t fully oxidised (not combined with oxygen).
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of extra oxygen needed after exercise to react with the build up of lactic acid and remove it from the cells.
What does anaerobic respiration go on in? Animal, plants, or both?
Both, along with yeast.
