AEMT 16 Flashcards
Airway Management, Ventilation and Oxygenation.
What is the funcntion of the respiratory system?
To obtain oxygen needed for cell metabolism and to eliminate carbone dioxide produced by cell metabolism.
What is resperation?
The process of gas exchange
Respiratoy support for metabolism requires what?
Ventilation and respiration.
The process of moving air in and out of the lungs is a mechanical process called?
Ventilation.
Once air enters the lungs, oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged across the respiratory membrane composed of the alveolar and pulmonary capillary walls in a process called?
External respiration
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood and the cells of the body is called
Internal resperation.
When carbon dioxide levels increase of oxygen levels decrease what signals the medulla oblingata?
Chemoreceptors in the aortic arch, carotid arteries and central nervous system.
What is it called when the stretch receptors in the lungs send signals that teminate insiration and the diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax?
Hering-Breuer reflex
When the chest is compressed during CPR, the increase in intrathoacic pressure forces what?
Blood out of the heart
It is important to make sure the chest wall is allowed to completely recoin between compressions in order to?
Allow the return of blood to the heart
Gag reflex prevents foreign material from entering what?
Hypopharynx
What occurs when oxygen is delivered to the cellular level by the hemoblobin in red blood cells and carbon dioxide from cellular metabolism diffuses into the blood?
internal respiration
The internal respiration process can be affected by what?
metabolic changes and toxins
What is alveolar ventilation?
the volume of air that reaches the aveoli each minute
Alveolar ventilation is the function of both what?
the respiratory rate and the tidal volume.
minute volume combinds the tital volume with what to measure the volume of air breathed each minute
respiratory rate
150 ml of the tidal volume never reaches the aveoli it is called
dead space air
when the titdal volume decreases does the dead space decrease as well?
no it reamains constant at the expense of the alveolar ventialtion
When you encounter a patient with airway edema what should you do
transport without delay
The lower airway involves
all structures blow the glottis
Patients with bronchoconstrictions usually have?
Wheezing on expiration.
When assessing circulation you need to ensure you have located and controlled what?
significant bleeding
Stridor, coughing, gurgling or wheezing are indications of what?
respiratory distress
If you are in doubt about air momevement what should you do?
auscultate both sides of the chest
an spO2 of less than 95% is a sign of ?
inadequate breathing
