What is the definition of a maternal death?
death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of the end of the pregnancy. from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.
What is a direct maternal death?
Deaths resulting from obstetric complications of the pregnancy state.
What is an indirect maternal death?
Deaths resulting from previous existing disease, but have been aggravated by pregnancy.
What is a late maternal death?
Deaths occurring between 42 days and 1 year after the end of pregnancy which could be cause directly or indirectly.
What is a coincidental maternal death?
Deaths from unrelated causes to pregnancy ie road traffic accident.

What is the leading cause of direct maternal death?
-thrombosis and thromboembolism
What is classed as a perinatal death?
-Stillbirth in the uk is after or the same as 24 weeks gestation
What is an early neonatal death?
Up to or the same as 7 days after birth
What is obesity? and what BMI do WHO class?
an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation which presents a risk to health. BMI >30 Obese
What is classed as severe and multiple disadvantage?
- Substance abuse
- domestic abuse
- abuse in childhood
- arrival in UK in last 5 years
- refugee or asylum seeker
- mental health diagnosis
- FGM
- known learning difficulties
