Adverse Drug Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
What are adverse drug reactions?
A
Adverse effects in normal conditions of use, but also from uses outside of marketing authorisation including misuse and abuse, medication error, overdose and occupational exposure
2
Q
Important adverse drug reactions
A
- Erythema multiforme - can lead to TEN (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
- Drug-induced lupus
- Torsades de Pointes (supraventricular tachycardia)
- Gingival Hyperplasia
3
Q
Type A adverse drug reactions
A
Augmented reactions - dose dependent and predictable based on the pharmacology of the drug
4
Q
Type B adverse drug reactions
A
Bizzare - idiosyncratic and not predictable on the basis of the pharmacology
5
Q
Describing an adverse drug reaction
A
DoTS
- Dose
- Time course of the reaction
- Relevant susceptibility factors
6
Q
Was it definitely the drug that caused the adverse reaction?
A
- Challenge - at/after treatment started?
- Dechallenge - stopped when treatment stopped?
- Rechallenge - began again on restarting drug?
- No alternative causes for the reacton
7
Q
How would you treat the following ADR’s?
- ACE inhibitor –> angioedema
- Dabigatrin (thrombin inhibitor) –> bleeding
- LA toxicity
A
- Icatibant - selective bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist - resolves angiodema
- Idarucizumab - prevents patient bleeding out
- IV lipid emulsion
