What is an adverb?
The adverbs tells us about a verb, a adjective or even a adverb they say how often, where, how much, how and when:
How do we form adverb?
We usually form adjectives adding -ly however there are some adverbs that only exist:
Casually
There are somes spelling rule to follow when we add -ly
- The adjectives end in Y, change the end to ily
- The adjectives end in LE,change to ly
- The adjectives end in e, keep the e and add ly
Some words looks like adverbs but they are adjectives and we don’t make adverbs from these adjectives
Irregular adverbs
There are some irregular adverbs, we don’t add ly to them:
like Well-Good and some adjectives and verbs looks the same like fast
What is the adverb position?
The adverbs usually go after the verb and when is several adverbs they usually go in this order: how, where,when
When adverbs can sometimes go at the beginning of the sentences: At one o’clock John cycled quickly to the station
How often? adverbs go:
adverbs usually go:
- before one-word verb: I never see you
- before a second verb of two part verb: I’ve never see you
- BUT after am/is/are/was/were: I’m often late
The adverbs already, also, just, still, even and only usually go in the same place as how often? adverbs:
I’m still at the station. I’ve just arrived/ I only thinking about you
Where as well and too go?
They usually go at the end of the senteces
Modifying adverbs and adjectives
Some verb change the meaning of adjective
I run very fast
I am very please for you invitation
They can make it stronger or less stronger
Note: Extremely, really, very, rather, fairly, quiet
