Simple adverbs
- Single words
- ex: very, quite, rather, really, so, somewhat, too, often, much, terribly
- Can be formed by adding -ly to the word stem or -wise, -ward, -s
What is an adverb?
Modifiers.
Modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.
Adverbs provide information about manner, place, time, degree, number, and reason.
Adverbs are used to affirm and negate.
Adverb can occur in any position in a sentence. However, adverb are always linked most significantly to a single word in a sentence, referred to as the head word. A head word is the word (usually verb) modified by the adverb.
Compound adverbs
- Two words or prefix and a word: separate, joined, or hyphenated
- ex: over there
- ex: counterclockwise
- ex: contra-laterally
What are the adverb forms?
Positive,comparative, and superlative

- adds more or less - Ex: more slowly, less quickly
Superlative form (adverb)
Compares three or more entities
- add most or least - Ex: most slowly, least quickly

- about,anywhere, around, behind, above, below, forwards, onwards, out
Time (adverb)
When? How long? How often?
- after, again, already, always, before, immediately, instantly, lately, now, once,presently, rarely, today, weekly, while
Degree (adverb)
How much?
- all, almost, barely, besides, equally, even, evenly, little, much, more, most, nearly, only,quite, really, some, surely, very
Number (adverb)
- order of events
- add -ly to cardinal numbers
- first, second, third, secondly, thirdly
reason (adverb)
why? what was the cause?
- consequently, therefore, thus, because, hence
Affirmation (adverb)
Approval or assent
-absolutely,certainly, definitely, indeed,really, surely, truly, yes
Negation (adverb)
