Q

What is dynamic EQ?

A

A dynamic EQ is a powerful tool that combines the precision of an equalizer with the musical ballistics of a compressor.

Q

What is Program EQ?

A
  • Capacitor, resistor & inductor based filter stage.
  • Fixed frequency, low boost/attenuator
  • Mid boost with variable bandwidth & LPF d
  • Uses tube output amplifier to make up for lost gain. * Very smooth and open sounding.
  • Great big fat low end!
  • Really good on entire mixes, (stereo mix-bus)

What is fixed frequency EQ?

A

Vintage EQ type where a set of filters is switched between with boost and cut controls for selected frequencies.

Q

What is a Tilt EQ?

A
  • A Tilt EQ is a simple type of EQ that tilts the audio spectrum based on a used selected pivot point.
  • As low frequencies are decreased, high frequencies are increased proportionally.
  • This is used to balance low and high frequency elements within a sound or mix,

Q

What is musical EQ?

A
  • Musical EQ’s tend to have fixed bandwidth control. Affecting wide frequency ranges. No Q control, generally speaking.
  • Broad tonal strokes rather than sharp, narrow cuts or boosts.
  • Used for tone shaping rather than fine tuning.
  • More colourful in general, less transparent.
  • Usually associated with vintage, and console EQ types.
  • Used more readily for additive EQ rather than subtractive EQ, and it is seen as a tool for sound enhancement.

Q

What is surgical EQ?

A
  • Variable bandwidth often allowing for very narrow Q factors to be selected.
  • Is capable of slicing out narrow groups of frequencies for the purpose of transparently removing offending frequencies.
  • Transparent, no colour. Just filters.
  • Often plugin EQ’s are better at surgical duties than outboard eq’s. There are very few surgical hardware EQ’s on the market that are as good as their plugin counterparts and are still affordable.
  • Even the most basic plugin EQ can beat very expensive hardware EQ’s at this job.

Q

What is Mid Side EQ?

A
  • Allows for independent control of the mid and side images of a stereo recording.
  • Used is stereo mixing and mastering, the mic/side eq can provide a lot of tone control within the stereo image.
  • One technique is to high pass the side image, which leaves your mid or low end in true mono.
  • Available on expensive hardware EQ’s and many plugin EQ’s
