Joseph Chien- Stuttering Modification 8 tips
- Create atmosphere of trust without censorship
- unconditional positive regard - Make the person the focus of therapy, not the stutter
- life can be better even if their stutter stays the same - Start where the client is not where you are (their feelings, goals, abilities)
- Respect the client’s shame, embarrassment and fear
- Don’t say, “you don’t have to feel that way” - Emphasize the future and not the past
- Show the client that you are interested and care about them as a person (smart, wonderful, capable)
- Help them prepare for the cyclical/variable nature of stuttering- Relapse
- Encourage independence
