Obtain brief details of the complaint to determine initial actions and if necessary conduct these

Refer incident as soon as possible to the CIB and an ASA investigator

Ensure a specialist crisis response person is arranged for the victim

An appropriate CIB member or ASA investigator undertakes a preliminary interview of the victim

What is the purpose of a preliminary interview
In most sexual assault investigations, a preliminary interview is necessary to gain a better understanding of what has occurred and to determine
- what further investigative actions are necessary
- whether an offence may have occurred and
- whether the victim wishes to make a formal complaint
What is after the preliminary interview
- Reassess the investigation and consider further investigative procedures
- Consider recent photo of the victim for evidential purposes
- Ensure the victim suitable change of clothing if required
- Ensure the Victim is advised of specialist services
Information feedback
- Give information on sexual assault support services
- Information about the Police investigation and timings of each stage
- Victim’s expectations in reporting, as in do they want to make a complaint
What do you need to advise the doctor in regards to a medical examination
- Age and gender of the Victim
- Timing of sexual assault
- Circumstances of incident
- Any suspected drugs or alcohol involved
- Details of Victims injuries
- Other health concerns
- Victims wishes about gender of doctor
What to take to a medical examination
- Medical Examination Kit / Toxicology Kit
- Change of clothing
- Any relevant documentation
- Arrange pick up time of complainant and kit
After the examination
- Receive clothing and any relevant exhibits i.e. MEK
- Blue copy of the Medical Examination Report
- Receive a briefing from the doctor in relation to forensic evidence / injuries / disclosures

An employee who has completed the specialist ASA investigators course and/or has completed the CIB selection and induction training course (post Feb 2011)
What is sexual assault
Sexual assault includes but is not limited to;
- Sexual violation by rape or unlawful sexual connection
- indecent assault
- any form of unwanted or coercive touching or actions of a sexual nature or in circumstances of indecency
- any sexual abuse or exploitation by way of coercion, deceit, power of authority or mistaken belief
- incest
