Adult Renal Tumors Flashcards
How does clear cell carcinoma look grossly?
Golden yellow color
Is mitotic activity a prominent feature of clear cell carcinoma?
No
Are clear cell carcinomas encapsulated?
No
What is a hallmark of chromophobe RCC?
Diffuse cytoplasmic positivity for hale colloidal iron
How does multilocular cystic renal neoplasm of low malignant potential look grossly?
Well-circumscribed, multi cystic mass separated from renal parenchyma by a fibrous pseudo capsule
How does multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma look histologically?
Variably sized cysts lined by a single layer of cells with clear cytoplasm and low grade nuclei
Also small clusters of clear cells in the fibrous septa that do not form an expansile mass (if they do that is RCC)
What is a histologic feature of clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma?
The tumor nuclei are arranged in a linear fashion, away from the basal aspect of the cell, either in the center or apical part
What are molecular characteristics of papillary renal cell carcinoma?
Trisomy of chromosome 7 and 17. As well as loss of chromosome Y
What is papillary adenoma in the kidney?
Papillary lesion that is less the 0.5 cm
What does chromophobe renal cell carcinoma arise from?
The intercalated cells of the renal cortex
What renal epithelial tumor is most common to have sarcomatoid growth pattern?
Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma
Which component in chromophobe renal cell carcinoma is associated with aggressive behavior?
Sarcomatoid component
What is the histologic appearance of an oncocytoma?
Variable and consists of solid compact nests, acini, tubules, or microcysts embedded in a hypo cellular, often hyalinized stroma
What is the gold standard to differentiate oncocytoma from chromophobe renal cell carcinoma?
Electron microscopy
What population is renal medullary carcinoma seen in?
Young African Americans with sickle cell trait
