Adrenoreceptor Blockers Flashcards
Class: non-selective alpha-blocker
MOA: irreversibly blocks alpha adrenergic receptors (a1 > a2)
Uses: pheochromocytoma (pre-surgical)
SE: orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia, GI irritation, myocardial ischemia, vasodilation; LONG EFFECT (covalently binds with alpha receptor)
PHENOXYBENZAMINE
Class: non-selective alpha-blocker
MOA: irreversibly blocks alpha adrenergic receptors (a1 > a2)
Uses: pheochromocytoma (pre-surgical), ANTIDOTE TO ALPHA-1 AGONIST OVERDOSE, rebound hypertension
SE: orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia, GI irritation, vasodilation
PHENTOLAMINE, TOLAZOLINE
Class: alpha-1-blocker
MOA: selectively blocks alpha-1 adrenergic receptors
Uses: BPH, HTN
SE: first dose orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia (less common/severe)
Similar: DOXAZOSIN TERAZOSIN TAMSULOSIN - most selective for prostatic smooth muscle SILODOSIN ALFUZOSIN
PRAZOSIN
Class: non-selective beta-blocker
MOA: blocks beta adrenergic receptors, blocks sympathetic effects on heart and BP, reduces renin release
Uses: angina prophylaxis, HTN, arrhythmias, migraine, performance anxiety, hyperthyroidism
SE: bronchospasm, AV block, HF, CNS sedation, erectile dysfunction; masks symptoms of hypoglycemia in diabetics
Similar:
PINDOLOL - intrinsic sympathomimetic activity; partial agonist (less bronchospasm, may be used in asthmatics)
TIMOLOL - absent local anesthetic activity; safe for use in eye (glaucoma)
LABETALOL - combined alpha- and beta-blocker (used for pheochromocytoma)
CARVEDILOL - combined alpha- and beta-blocker (used for pheochromocytoma)
NADOLOL
LEVOBUNOLOL
METIPRANOLOL
PROPRANOLOL
Class: beta-1-blocker
MOA: blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors, blocks sympathetic effects on heart and BP
Uses: angina, HTN, HF
SE: bronchospasm (less), AV block, HF, CNS sedation, erectile dysfunction
Similar:
BETAXOLOL - absent local anesthetic activity; safe for use in eye (glaucoma)
ESMOLOL - for SVT (shortest half-life)
ACEBUTOLOL - intrinsic sympathomimetic activity; partial agonist (less bronchospasm, may be used in asthmatics)
METOPROLOL
ALPRENOLOL
NEBIVOLOL
ATENOLOL
