Adrenergic drugs--Hwa Flashcards
Where are alpha 1 receptors located?
Everywhere
Where are alpha 2 receptors located?
On the blood vessels
Where are beta 1 receptors located?
On the heart
Where are beta 2 receptors located?
Respiratory tract, blood vessels, and uterus
What do alpha 2 receptors do?
Vasoconstriction, some inhibition of NE (negative feedback loop)
Name the alpha 1 agonist drugs
Phenylephrine (Neosynephrine) and oxymetazoline
Name the alpha 2 agonist drugs
Clonidine (Catapress) and dexmedetomidine
Name the Beta 1 selective agonists
Dobutamine (Dobutrex)
Name the Beta 2 selective agonists
Albuterol (Ventolin), salmeterol, terbutaline
Name the non-selective beta agonists
Isoproterenol (isuprel)
Name the non-selective alpha ANTagonists
phenolamine and phenoxybenzamine
Name the A1 selective ANTagonists
Prazosin, Tamsulosin, Doxazosin
Name the nonselective beta blockers
propranolol Timolol Pindolol Sotalol Labetolol Carvedilol Nadolol
Name the beta 1 selective antagonists
metoprolol
atenolol
What patient groups are we worried about giving beta 2 nonselective blockers?
COPD patients, asthma patients. Also, diabetics because Beta 2 blockers inhibit insulin, glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. After an insulin shot, diabetics then become more prone to hypoglycemia
What is isoproterenol used for?
Vasodilation and increase HR (non-selective beta blocker)
What are the side effects of isoproterenol?
tachycardia, BP, arrhythmias
What is phenylephedrine used for?
Nasal decongestion, mydriatic, hypertensive
What is phenylephedrine used for?
Vasoconstriction
What is clonidine used for?
hypotension, menopausal flushing, migraine
How is clonidine delivered?
IV
What are the effects of clonidine administration?
Acute hypertensive response
What are the side effects of clonidine?
dry mouth, sedation, contact dermatitis
What is dobutamine used for?
Cardiogenic shock
What are the effects of dobutamine?
Increased HR and contractility, dilation of renal and mesenteric vessels
