Adrenergic Drugs Flashcards
Alpha receptor
Vasoconstricton (increase BP, decrease blood flow)
Beta 1 receptor
Increases rate and force of cardiac contraction
Beta 2 receptor
Relaxes non-vascular smooth muscle
Causes bronchodilation, reduced internal muscle tone, vasodilation
Epinephrine
Binds to alpha, beta 1 and 2
Increases cardiac output and vasoconstriction
Norepinephrine
Binds well to alpha and beta 1, less well to beta 2
Increase cardiac output and vasoconstriction
Clonidine
Alpha 2 receptors in CNS to reduce symphathetic outflow
Anti hypertensive
Brimonidine
Alpha 2 agonist
Used to treat glaucoma (get rid of excess liquids in the eye)
Isoproternol
Nonselective beta agonist
Increases cardiac output, vasodilation
Helps treat bradycardia and heartblock
Albuterol
Long acting beta 2 agonist (vasodilation, bronchodilation)
Treats asthma and COPD
Terbutaline
Long acting beta 2 agonist (vasodilation, bronchodilation)
Treats asthma
Better than isoproternol for bronchial effects (less effect on the heart)
Tyramine
Indirect sympathomimetic
Increase sympathetic outflow
Found in food and drinks- large release of norepinephrine- hypertensive crisis
Amphetamine
Indirect sympathomimetic
CNS Stimulant
Treats ADHD, narcolepsy
Cocaine
Inhibits NET (norepinephrine accumulates in the cleft)
CNS stimulant
Prazosin
Alpha 1 selective antagonist
Lowers BP, can cause orthostatic hypotension (low BP cause by sitting or lying down)
Used to treat hypertension
Yohimbine
Alpha 2 selective receptor antagonists
Increases sympathetic outflow from CNS
Increases BP, HR by blocking CNS postsynaptic receptors
Propranolol
Nonselective beta blocker
Binds well to receptor, weak physiological response
Used to treat hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias
Timolol
Relatively short acting Nonselective beta blocker
Used to treat hypertension, angina, glaucoma
Pindolo
Partial agonist Nonselective beta receptor blockers
Used to treat hypertension, angina
Atenolol
Beta 1 selective blocker
Used to treat hypertension, angina
Carvedilol
Blocks alpha 1 receptor, beta blocker
Used to treat hypertension, CHF
Nebivolol
Triggers nitric oxide release by epithelial cells, beta 1 blocker
Used to treat hypertension
Metyrosine
Inhibit rate limiting step in synthesis of catecholamines
Used to treat hypertension, pheochromocytoma
Reserpine
Irreversibly inhibit VMAT
Depletes stores of catecholamine greatly within hours
Used to treat hypertension, psychosis
Methyldopa
DOPA decarboxylase
Used to treat hypertension
