Adrenergic antagonists Flashcards
phenoxybenxamine
non-selective alpha blocker
non-competitive
binds covalently –> any dose of sympath agonist = ineffective until drug metabolized (t 1/2 = 24 hrs)
also blocks histamine, ACh, and serotonin Rs
treats pheochromocytoma, PVD, raynauds sx
phentolamine
non-selective alpha blocker
competitive –> reversible
prazosin
alpha 1 selective –> therefore allows alpha 2 to continue to inhibit NE release –> fewer incidences of reflex bradycardia
treats HTN
tamsulosin
alpha 1A selective –> allows blockade of prostatic smooth mm contraction
treats HTN, BPH
propranolol
non-selective beta blocker
lipid soluble –> enters CNS
treats angina pectoris, HTN, migraine, arrhythmias, pheochromocytoma, thyrotoxicosis, anxiety, decrease mortality after AMI
can mask signs of hypoglycemia in DM pts
atenolol
cardioselective beta 1 blocker
treats HTN, chronic stable angina
allows normal response to hypoglycemia
acebutolol
cardioselective beta 1 blocker
treats HTN and dysrhythmias
metoprolol
cardioselective beta 1 blocker
treats HTN
betaxolol
beta 1 selective blocker
treats glaucoma and HTN
labetalol
selective alpha 1 and non-selective beta 1 and 2 antagonist
treats HTN, pheochromocytoma
carvedilol
non-selective beta antagonist reduces mortality in pts w/ stable class II or class III CHF
