Adrenergic Agents-HTN and HF Drugs Flashcards
Prozasin
Adrenergic Agent
Therapeutic Use – Dilation of arterioles and veins to treat hypertension
Mechanism – α1-adrenergic antagonist
Adverse effects:
reflex tachycardia
Metoprolol
Adrenergic Agent
Indication: hypertension, angina, MI, HF
Mechanism: blocks ß1 receptors (“cardioselective”), decreasing heart rate, AV conduction, contractility; also reduces ß1-mediated renin release in the kidney
Adverse Effects: rebound cardiac excitement, block caution in heart block and HF
Clonidine
Adrenergic Agent
Indication: hypertension (resistant form)
Mechanism: central α2 activation in the brainstem sympathetic outflow (by enhancing feedback inhibition of NE release)
Adverse Effects: CNS effects (nightmares, anxiety and depression)
Reserpine
Adrenergic Agent
Indication: Hypertension
MOA: Depletion of NE from presynaptic sympathetic neurons-reduce alpha and beta-receptor effects leading to vasodilation and slowing of the heart
Side Effect: Depression
