Adrenaline & Thyroxine Flashcards
Which system do adrenalin & thyroxine come from?
Endocrine
How do chemicals get to the target organ?
Via blood
What is negatibe feedback?
- homeostatic mechanism that occurs when body detects a change & makes adjustment to return itself to normal
Why does adrenalin not involve negative feedback?
- fight/flight response
- no ‘normal’ level of adrenalin
Where is thyroxine produced?
thyroid gland
What does thyroxine control?
- metabolism
- protein synthesis
What happens if thyroxine levels increase?
- pituitary gland releases less thyroxine stimulating hormone
- less thyroxine released from thyroid
- lower metabolism + lower levels of protein synthesis
What happens if thyroxine levels decrease?
- pituitary gland releases less thyroxine stimulating hormone
- less thyroxine released from thyroid
- lower metabolism + lower levels of protein synthesis
Where is adrenalin produced?
adrenal gland on kidney
How does adrenalin affect breathing rate?
increases breathing rate to get more O2 into blood
How does adrenalin affect pupils?
dilates pupils to let light in
Hoe does adrenalin affect heart rate?
increases heart rate to pump blood faster
How does adrenalin affect glycogen?
breaks down glycogen reserves in muscle cells to release glucose for respiration
How does adrenalin affect blood?
redirects blood from digestive system to skeletal muscles
