Adrenaline and Fight or Fight Flashcards
What is the fight or flight response triggered by?
Stressful events.
Which parts of the body coordinate the fight or flight response?
Autonomic nervous system
- Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Adrenaline
Which part of the brain and which gland becomes activated when we experience a stressful event?
The hypothalamus and the pituitary gland
The brain triggers activity in which branch of the nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system.
What does adrenaline do in fight or flight?
It triggers the physiological changes such as faster heart rate.
Describe what the sympathetic nervous system does in fight or flight.
It allows functions involved in fight or flight to increase. Heart rate, breathing rate, pupil dilation etc all increase.
Less important functions for fight or flight such as digestion are slowed
After the threat has passed, which branch of the nervous system returns the body to normal?
The parasympathetic nervous system slows down the functions increased for fight or flight and raises ones that were previously slowed.
