Adrenal histology Flashcards
1
Q
Which species have zona glomerulosa?
A
Primates and ruminants
2
Q
Which species have a zone arcuate (instead of a glomerulosa)?
A
Cat, dog, horse, pig
Arcuata = arched stacks
3
Q
Describe the zone fasciculate.
A
Vacuolated (lipid-rich) parenchymal cells
Arranged in rows/columns
Capillaries b/t columns
4
Q
Describe zona reticulares
A
- Small, eosinophilic cells
- Less vacuolated than zona fasciliaris
- Anastomosing networks
5
Q
EM: Steroid-secreting v Protein-secreting cells
A
Steroid-secreting:
- Extensive smooth ER
- ROUND mitochondria (where cholesterol becomes pregnenolone)
- Lipid droplets (store cholesterol); as large as mitochondria
- Coated pits (where LDL enters)
Peptide-secreting:
- Rough ER
- Skinny mitochondria
- Secretory granules (smaller than lipid droplets)
6
Q
Describe chromaffin cells
A
Round to columnar
Clusterd
Slightly granular
May be near sympathetic ganglion cells (bulls-eye)
