Adrenal glands Flashcards
What three differnet categories of hormones does the adrenal cortex produce?
1.Glucocorticoids
2.mineralocorticoids
3.sex hormones
Major 2 hormones produced by adrenal cortex
Cortisol and Aldosterone
Cortisol
-how does our body get it?
-where does it go after it is secreted?
-do cortisol reduce or increase swelling?
-secreted when body is under STRESS
-Our body gets it through the anterior pituitary gland releases ACTH which travels to adrenal cortex and stimulated release of cortisol
-Cortisol REDUCES swelling because it inhibits the immune system
Aldosterone
-stimulates kidneys to absorb Na+ and excrete K+ in order to retain H20. This increases blood volume and pressure
What is aldosterone secretion stimulated by?
renin releases by kidneys
What two major hormones does the adrenal medulla produce?
Norepineohrine and Epinephrine
The adrenal medulla is stimulated by what system?
THE SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM (SNS) through innervation of nerves
Norpinephrine and epinephrine
- stimulates fast heart beat
-dialates bronchiols (increases ventilation)
-causes widespread vasoconstriction
-stimulates liver to generarte glucose
Norpinephrine and epinephrine are both what kind of hormone?
They are both stress hormones
Gonads
SEX hormones
-composed of testis and ovaries
the ____ from anterior pituitary gland stimulates gonads to produce what three hormones?
LH from Anterior pituitary gland stimulates gonads to produce Androgens, Estrogen, and progesterone
Androgen and example:
Develop male secondary sex traits
ex: testosterone
Estrogen and progesterone:
Develop female secondary sex characteristics
FSH from the anterior pituitary gland stimulates gonads to produce what?
sperm and eggs
Pancreas
what hormones?
- responsible for glucose regulation
-produces insulin and glucagon
