What is ADR
the process of re-recording dialogue by the original actor (or a replacement actor) after the filming process to improve audio quality or to make changes to the originally scripted dialogue
Other than ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) what else can it be known as?
dubbing, looping, re- recording, or post-sync
Who records dialogue during filming?
A production sound mixer
What causes unusable production sound?
Noise from the set, equipment, traffic, wind, and the overall ambience of the surrounding environment
During the Post Production process who reviews all of the dialogue in the film and decides which lines will have to be re-recorded?
A supervising sound editor or ADR Supervisor
What is it called when ADR is recorded on location, with mobile equipment?
Recording ‘Wild’ dialogue’ or ‘ Wild lines.
What microphones are generally used to record ADR in a STUDIO?
Large diaphragm condenser microphones. The industry standard is a Neumann U87.
What mic is generally used for dubbing stages?
The Sennheiser 416 shotgun microphone.
Where are ADR engineers normally found in the APP process?
Near the beginning, followed by ADR/Dialogue Editors, and dubbing mixers, who are in charge of the final mixing process.
What are some of techniques ADR engineers need to become familiar with to problem-solve some of the problems involved in the process of APP?
- Equalization to match production dialogue
- Use of Room tone (background ambience)
- Use of Reverb to match production dialogue locations
What is Dialogue editing used for?
Used to sync recorded ADR perfectly with the picture and is done manually.
What are some plugins that can be used for Dialogue editing?
Vocalign, ‘Sounds in Sync’ Edicue, EdiPrompt
