2. provides meaning and direction through commitments, values and goals
- provides a self of personal control and free will
- enables one to strive for consistency , coherence, and harmony, between values, beliefs and commitments
- enables one to recognize one’s potential through a sense of future possibilities and alternatives choices

adolescents vary in how easily they go abut developing personal identity - four stages of identity development in adolescence:
identity diffusion - no exploration of, or commitment to roles and values
foreclosure - commitment made to roles and values without exploration
moratorium - exploration of roles and values without commitment
identity achievement exploration of roles and values followed by commitment
Kohlberg adolescents capable of postconventional moral reasoning
or morality based on moral principles that transcend social rules: may never go beyond conventional morality, or morality based on social rules
separation individuation
the development of a self or identity that is unique and separate
adolescent at risk - family disruptions, developmentally disable siblings, conflicted relationship with peers,
childhood spent in chronic poverty, alcoholic and psychotic parents, moderate to severe physical disability, school problems in middle childhood
