Adnergic Agonists Flashcards
Epinephrine effects and uses
B> a
Increases BP (high dose), † HR, CO
Anaphylaxis, asthma, shock, open-angle glaucoma; a effects predominate at high doses. Stronger effect at B2-receptor than norepinephrine.
Norepinephrine effects and uses
a1>a2>B1
Increases BP, lower 1HR (may have minor reflexive change in response to 1 BP due to ou agonism outweighing direct
B, chronotropic effect),
-/1 CO
Hypotension, septic shock.
Isoproterenol effects and uses
B1=B2
Decrease BP via vasodilation, increase HR and CO
Electrophysiologic evaluation of
tachyarrhythmias. Can worsen ischemia. Has negligible a effect.
Dopamine effects and uses
D1=D2>B>a
Increases BP in high doses
HR INCREASES and CO
Unstable bradycardia, shock; inotropic and chronotropic effects at lower doses via B effects; vasoconstriction at high doses via a effects.
Oxymetazoline and Phenylephrine
Oxymetazoline is found in many over-the-counter nasal spray decongestants, as well as in ophthalmic drops for the relief of redness of the eyes associated with swimming, colds, and contact lenses.
Phenylephrine
a1>a2
Hypertension (vasoconstriction)
Lowers HR and CO
Uses
Hypotension (vasoconstrictor), ocular procedures (mydriatic), rhinitis (decongestant), ischemic priapism.
Midodrine
A1
Increses BP vasoconstriction/ lowers HR AND CO
Uses
Autonomic insufficiency and postural hypotension. May exacerbate supine hypertension.
Albuterol, salmeterol,terbutaline
Albuterol short acting B2 agonist SABA
Salmmeterol and terbutaline long acting B2 agonists LABA
May increase HR alil bit
Uses:
Albuterol for acute asthma/COPD. Salmeterol for serial (long-term) asthma/COPD. Terbutaline for acute bronchospasm in asthma and tocolysis.
Mirabegron
B3 agonist
Urinary urgency or incontinence or overactive bladder. Think “mirab3gron.”
Side effects of adrnergic agonists?
Arrhythmias,insomnia,headaches,hyperactivity,nausea,tremors
