Surface anaesthesia
Anaesthesia 2-3mm of surface tissue I/O
Forms available:
Spray 10% lidocaine
Gel 20% benzocaine and 5% lidocaine analgesic gel
LA for cardiac patients
Plain lidocaine
Prilocaine 3% with Felypressin
Mepivacaine HCL 3%
When is Ariticaine used?
Good for anaesthetising hypoplastic first permanent molar teeth
lower restorations where coagulopathy
slow infiltration over 1 minute
Toxicity of LA
Max dose:
Lidocaine 4.4mg/kg
3-5yrs child (20kg) 2 cartridges
Early localised complications can occur
Pain
intravascular
failure of LA
facial nerve paralysis
interference with special sense
Late localised complications can occur
self inflicted
oral ulceration
long lasting anaesthesia
trismus
infection
developmental defects
contra-indications of LA
young age
disability preventing co-op
allergy
liver disease
poor blood supply
bleeding disorders
incomplete root formation
trismus
epilepsy
