What was adlers theory based upon
Individual psychology
Focus on understanding each person as a whole and how they strive to overcome feelings of inferiority
Inferiority complex and compensation
Adler believed everyone feels inferior at some point, especially in childhood.
These feelings can drive a person to compensate by developing strengths or abilities to overcome them
What are the two ways people can respond to inferiority
working to overcome it in healthy ways or by developing an inferiority complex, which leads to feelings of inadequacy
How did Adler define personality
Defined personality as a unique, holistic pattern of behaviours, thoughgs and emotions that develop over time
Striving for superiority
The desire to achieve personal growth and development, not in comparison but for self development
What is social interest
The ability to care and contribute to the well being of others
He believed healthy individuals contribute to society, whereas unhealthy ones are self centred
Birth order
1st born: leader
2nd born: compete over first born
3rd born: spoiled, attention seeking
Only child: no sibling rivalry, hard time socialising when younger, likely to be pampered
Role of the father
- role model for contribution to family welfare and society
- ## must be seen to treat mother as an equal

Introduce to social life
If mother feels unhappy with her role she puts responsibilities on child and child can feel inferior
