Past influences the present –first 6 years of life are important
what does it mean to say “we have the capacity to choose”?
our influence on our behavior/thoughts go beyond genetic and environment
what does adlerian therapy stress?
social, systemic, and humanistic
what is Phenomenological thinking?
each person sees situations from a unique point of view (subjective reality; object is not as important)
what does it mean to be holistic?
unity and indivisibility of the person; all aspect of a person have to be understood in relationship (context)
adlerian therapy strives for?
success, mastery, completion – Inferiority feelings as a catalyst
(compensation)
what is your teology?
goal oriented- think, feel, and act in relation to your goal
what is your fictional finalism?
imagined life goal that guides a person behavior (replaced with guiding self-ideal) – “only when I am perfect can I be accepted,” “only when I am important can I be accepted.
what do these fictions do?
may help a person feel powerful and justify the rightness of their selfish choices, although at the same time cause others harm and injustice and destroy relationships
adler says people are motivated by?
more by their expectations of the future than they are by the past
where do you get the ideas in your fictional finalism from?
people act as much from accepted ideals as they do from observed reality. Whatever the subconscious mind accepts as true, it acts as if it is true whether it is or not
what is your private logic?
Concepts about self, others, and the world on which the client’s lifestyle is based – “I am basically unlovable,” “people can’t be trusted.”

Characteristic way of thinking, feeling, acting, living as we strive towards our long-term goals
what is your social interest?
being as concerned about others (empathy) as one in about oneself; sign of mental health
what is your community interest?
feeling connected to all of humanity; Life tasks (social task-friendships, love-marriage-intimacy, occupational task-contributing to society)
your community interest has a connection to?
your social interest, “social interest is the action line of community feeling”
what are your life tasks?
social task -> friendships
love task -> dating, intimacy
work task -> contributing to society
what is birth order?
- Oldest: Dependable and hard working; compensates by becoming a model child and exhibiting a high achievement drive
- Second (only two): Competitive, opposite to the first-born
- Middle child: “poor me,” problem child or peacemaker in dysfunctional families
- Youngest child: Pampered and spoiled, helplessness as an art form
- Only child: Similar to first-born, but does not learn to share or cooperate; Needs to be the center of attention.
