Adjectives Flashcards
What is the common rule for adjectives ending in…
“o”
“e”
consonants
What are the exceptions to these rules?
4 forms if end in -o: alto, alta, altos, altas
2 forms if end in -e: inteligente, inteligentes
2 forms if end in consonant (most): popular, populares (form plural by adding -es)
Exc. Adjectives ending in -or, -án, -ón, or -ín have a feminine form. Add -a(s) for feminine and add -es for masc. plural
What is the rule for adjectives of nationality
If end in “o” - like any “o”-ending adjective with 4 forms
If end in consonant - special rule with 4 forms
- add “a” for feminine and “as” for plural feminine
- add “es” for masculine plural
Adjectives of quantity almost always come before the noun. Such adjectives tell how much or how many e.g. poco, mucho
poco = (a) little, a few mucho = (a) lot, many
Adjectives that are descriptive usually follow the noun they describe e.g. alto, pequeño, rojo
…but if the descriptor speaks of a quality that is inherent and usually taken for granted, the adjective comes first.
alto = tall - el niño alto pequeño = small - el gato pequeño rojo = red - la manzana rojo
la blanca nieve (snow is inherently white)
los altos picos (peaks are inherently tall)
