ADHD Flashcards
What are the 3 major ADHD subtypes?
- Predominantly hyperactive- impulsive
- Predominantly inattentive
- Combination
What genes are linked to ADHD?
GRM7
Encodes a glutamate R subunit
Name the ADHD treatments
• Methylphenidate (Ritalin)
[Prevents reuptake of Dopamine & causes reverse transport]
• Atomoxetine
[Prevents reuptake of NA]
What are the 3 types of validity animal models require?
• Face Validity
(The ability to mimic behavioural characteristics of ADHD)
• Construct Validity
(Conform to a theoretical rationale of ADHD)
• Predictive Validity
(Ability to predict previously unknown aspects of behaviour, genetics & neurobiology of ADHD)
What is the strategy to studying ADHD?
1) reverse genetics [identify gene in human patients]
2) clone the gene
3) knock it down/ over express it in animal model
4) Measure the behaviour
5) See whether the gene has a similar function in the animal model as it does in human patients
Name the mouse/rat model in ADHD
- spontaneous hypertensive rat
- Dopamine transporter KO mouse
- Coloboma mutant mouse
- 6-OHDA lesions rat
