Hyperactivity/ impulsivity
Unable to play quietly
Talks excessively
Does not wait their turn easily
Will spontaneously leave their seat when expected to sit down
Is often ‘on the go’
Often interruptive or intrusive to others
Answers prematurely before a question has been finished
Run and climb in situations where it is not appropriate
Management
10 week watch and wait
Referral to secondary care
Drug therapy
Methylphenidate first line in children
If inadequate response switch to lisdexamfetamine
Both are first line in adults
Methylphenidate
CNS stimulant primarily acts as a dopamine/ noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor
Side effects
- abdo pain
- nausea and dyspepsia
Before starting drugs
All potentially cardiotoxic
Baseline ECG before starting
