ADH (Vasopressin) Diabetes Insipidus and Inappropriate ADH Syndrome Flashcards
What is diabetes insipidus?
disorder that causes an imbalance of fluids in the body
imbalance =
produce large amounts of urine
very thirsty even if you have a drink
Pathophysiology; diabetes insipidus:
deficit of ADH
originate in neurohypophysis
head injury or surgery may = temporary condition
some cases nephrogenic when renal tubes do not respond to the hormone (genetic, electrolyte imbalance, drugs)
Where is the neurohypophysis located?
a structure that is located at the base of the brain and is the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland
What does the neurohypophysis do?
coordinates:
- fluid balannce and reproductive function through action of two peptide hormones: vasopressin and oxytocin
What is the neurohypophysis?
nervous tissue, structural foundation of a neuro-humoral system
Where is ADH produced?
hypothalamus
released by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain
SnS; diabetes insipidus:
polyuria w large volumes dilute urine
thirst eventually causing severe dehydration (not glucose not present urine as in DM)
Tx; diabetes insipidus:
replacement therapy for ADH
Pathophysiology; inappropriate antidiuretic syndrome:
excess ADH = retention fluid
some cases additional ADH - temporary, triggered by stress or may be secret by an ectopic source (e.g. bronchogenic carcinoma)
SnS; inappropriate antidiuretic syndrome:
related to severe hyponatremia = mental confusion and irritability
Tx; inappropriate antidiuretic syndrome:
diuretics, sodium supplements , investigate underlying cause
Hyponatremia
