Adenoviridae Flashcards
Adenoviridae
Double stranded DNA
Serotypes 40 and 41 cause diarrhoea
Entreric adenoviruses are fastidious
Pathogenesis of adenoviruses
Mainly by respiratory or oro-faecal contact from humans
They multiply in the small intestine and then spread to mesentery where epithelial cells are infected
can become latent in lymphoid tissue
Immunity to adenoviruses
Characterised by development of effective long lasting immunity to the same serotype
Symptoms of adenoviruses
Primarily affects children
Incubation period is from 5-8 days
Ususally occurs in day cares
Manifests as fever and water diarrhea which resolves within one to two weeks
Lab diagnosis
Fecal specimen
CPE: cell rounding and aggregation into grape like clusters
Stool electron microscopy
Serology for antibody titre
Treatment
no vaccine
Adeno-associated viruses
Belong to family parvoviridae (Group B)
Unable to replicate independently as they do not have enough DNA
Other uses of adenoviruses
Vaccine carriers
