Preoperative procedures assisting as scrubbed nurse
Don hair cap and scrub suit, short, clean fingernails
Pre-operative scrubbing of hands and arms
Don sterile gown and sterile surgical gloves.
Nursing care examples
Prepare warm, comfortable cage in quiet environment.
Provide oxygen supplementation, use oxygen tent if mask not tolerated.
Prepare fluid therapy and administer on VS instructions.
Provide heat (i.e. heat pads, Bair Hugger) and monitor body temperature closely.
Monitor and record other vital signs – pulse and respiration.
Immobilise fracture – dressing applied above and below joint of limb affected.
Liaise with veterinary surgeons regarding provision of analgesia.
Scrubbed nurse role
To be familiar with instruments and equipment on instrument trolley and
anticipate instruments required
Ensure instrument trolley is kept tidy
To pass instruments to the surgeon ready to be used.
All swabs, needles, instruments to be counted
Nursing role whilst monitoring the patient under anaesthesia
Close monitoring and recording of the vital signs – temperature, pulse and respiration.
Body temperature is maintained

Palpate femoral pulse
Monitor planes of anaesthesia via palpebral reflex and withdrawal reflex.
Monitor and record fluid administration
Describe appropriate care of the patient during recovery
Provide quiet, darkened and warm recovery area
Maintaining body temperature, i.e. Heat pads, bubble wrap –
Monitor closely and provision of fluid therapy.
Liaise with VS re analgesia
Encourage eating and drinking asap to check normal function/ability
