What is the difference between the social and medical model defining disability?
Medical - is concerned with the inability to perform day-to-day tasks or tasks with the manner that is accepted as ‘normal’. Is concerned about actual tasks and that the impairments causing this should be fixed or changed by medical and other treatments
The social model is that disability is caused by the way that society is organised rather than by a person’s impairment or difference
It is society that creates segregation and organizes people into groups
What are some syndromes associated with a learning disability?
- ASD
- Down’s Syndrome
- Cerebral palsy
- Fragile X syndrome
- Prader Willi
- PKU
What is Downs syndrome and what is the chromosomal defect?
A neurodevelopmental disorder
Normally caused by a full trisomy of chromosome 21 (3x chromosome 21)
What are some medical features of Down’s syndrome?
- congenital heart defects
- alzheimers dementia
- epilepsy
- leukaemia
- hearing impairment
- diabetes mellitus
- coeliac disease
- thyroid disease
- intellectual impairment
Why might it be hard to access the mouth of someone with cerebral palsy?
How can you overcome this? (2 ways)
Muscle stiffness and weakness
They may find it hard to keep their mouth open
Can use finger guards (made of plastic) so they can bite down on the plastic but probs the mouth open enough to see in
Bite blocks - again props the occlusion open to allow access and to be able to see

What prophylaxis is given for risk of infective endocarditis. When should it be given and when should they be monitored?
Amoxycillin = 3g
