Additional Notes Flashcards
Asymmetrical body symmetry
No symmetry, eg sponges
Radial symmetry
Eg jellyfish.
Lack Head
No front/back
Able to interact with environment from any direction
Anchored and cannot move to obtain food
Bilateral symmetry
Eg goat
Right/left side are symmetrical
Have a distinct head, tail, bottom, back
Well adapted for movement
Segmentation
Animals with bilateral symmetry are segmented into several repeating parts
Annelids
A segmented worm. Consists of distinct tail, and several identical segmented rings
Limbs
Used for movement, feeding, or gathering sensory info
Animal phyla is often defined by?
Appendages such as antenna, mouth parts, wings, gills, legs, fins, arms, and tail parts
Invertebrates
No back bones. More than 98% of animals are invertebrates. They aren’t a branch on the phylogenetic tree bc of a lack of a feature cannot define a group
Vertebrates
Make up most of the phylum chordata. HAVEA skull and a backbone. Most have skeletal parts like shoulders and a pelvis that support paired limbs
