Additional Hemepath Flashcards
what findings on smear are seen with G6PD?
blister cells and bite cells
For Chediak Higashi what is the underlying problem and what is seen on smear?
Its a lysosome problem
see large azurophilic or grey granules in the neutrophils and lymphocytes
what are howell jolly bodies
Are DNA remnants in the RBC found in post-splenectomy patients severe hemolytic anemia CDA premature babies
what is basophilic stippling?
aggregated ribosomes with incompletely degraded RNA lead poisoning Pyrimidine 5' deficiency thal hemoglobinopathies sideroblastic anemia MDS CDA
What are pappenheimer bodies?
lysosomes containing iron-protein complexes
seen asplenia, iron overload
Heinz bodies
aggregates of denatured Hb which is attached to the inner RBC membrane, need supravital stain in order to visualize
seen in G6PD, hereditary Heinz body hemolytic anemia,
what is seen in HbH disease on smear?
precipitates of excess beta tetramer chains, but need to use the supravital dye in order to visualize
what is the pelger-huet anomaly?
caused by mutations in the lamin B receptor
heterozygotes will have bilobed neutrophils
homozygotes will have round unilobed nuclei
what is seen on smear in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis?
WBC can have an increase in azurophilic granules
in lysosomal storage diseases (ie mucopolysaccharidoses, galactosialidosis)
associated with vacuolated lymphocytes
