Q

what type of forces hold the addition polymer chains together

A

VDW

the longer the polymer chain the more vdw forces there are.

Q

when can a polymer be polar

A

when it contains Cl

these polymers will have a permanent dipole dipole force

Q

How do plasticisers affect polymers

A

They make the polymer more flexible
the plasticiser molecules get BETWEEN the polymer chains and push them apart
reducing the strength of the intermolecular forces between the chain.

Q

plasticised PVC vs Rigid PVC

A

plasticised pvc is much more flexible and is used to make electrical cable insulation, clothing, flooring tiles
Rigid PVC is used to make drainpipes and window frames
