What is true Addison’s disease?
A rare condition where the adrenal glands fail to produce enough cortisol and sometimes aldosterone.
How common is true Addison’s disease?
very rare, affecting few per 100,000 people.
What are the main signs and symptoms of Addison’s disease?
Chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, weight and appetite loss, hypotension, and hyperpigmentation of the skin.
Why are symptoms of Addison’s disease often ignored initially?
They progress slowly and may not be noticed until a stressful event like an illness or accident worsens them.
What is an Addisonian crisis?
Acute adrenal insufficiency caused by sudden worsening of Addison’s disease symptoms, often triggered by stress.
What are the symptoms of an Addisonian crisis?
Sudden severe pain in the lower back, abdomen, or legs
Severe vomiting and diarrhoea
Dehydration
Low blood pressure
Loss of consciousness
What can happen if an Addisonian crisis is left untreated?
can be fatal.
What is the general treatment for Addison’s disease?
Hormone replacement therapy to replace missing cortisol and aldosterone.
How is cortisol replaced in Addison’s disease?
With oral hydrocortisone tablets.
How is aldosterone replaced if deficient in Addison’s disease?
With oral doses of fludrocortisone (a mineralocorticoid).
