Adaptive/Specific Immunity Flashcards
Adaptive Immunity - 2 Mediators
Humoral - Antibody Mediated Immunity
- Involves B Lymphocytes
Cell-mediated Immunity
- Cytotoxic C cells
Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) - 2 molecular classes
MHC-I - expressed on all nucleated cells
MHC-II - expressed on antigent-presenting cells
Only identical twins have the same MHCs on their cells
When do T-cells recognize antigens?
When they are associated with MHC-2 proteins
APCs (Antigen Presenting Cells)
Present exogenous antigens with MHC-II
APCs present exogenous antigens with MCH-II
1) phagocytosis of bacteria
2) MHC class 2 molecules produced
3) They are presented on surface of phagocyte, binded peptide fragments to MHC-II
4) Insert antigent MHC-II complexes on plasma membrane
Adaptive Immune Response
Antigen Presenting Cells (APC)
APCS (MHC-II + Antigen)
Interdigitating dendritic cell / “Professional APC”
Macrophage
B lymphocyte (B cell)
Antigen Characteristics (2)
Reactivity - Antibody binds to the antigen that provoked it
Immunogenicity - Can provoke an immune response (production of antibody specific to that antigen)
