Adaptive Immunity System overview Flashcards
define antigen
any substance that can be recognized by the adaptive immune system. usually foreign
antigens inlcude
proteins, DNA, CHO and some lipids
immunogens
antigens that induce an adaptive immune response
the adaptive immune system targets infections
inside cells (bacteria/virus), inside macrophages (Mycobacterium), outside cells (bacteria/viruses/exotoxins)
how is adaptive immunity specific compared to innate
each pathogen is targeted separately
how is adaptive immunity diverse compared to innate
millions of diff B and T cells
how is adaptive immunity self-tolerant compared to innate
system eliminates self-reactive B and T cells
how is adaptive immunity inducible compared to innate
only T and B cells required to fight a particular infection will respond
how does adaptive immunity have memory compared to innate
any B and T cells that have responded to an infection will produce memory B and T cells with same specificity. these cells respond quickly if you get the same infection again
