Adaptive Immunity 1 Flashcards
Where do T cells and B cells develop?
T cells in Thymus
B cells in Bone marrow
How are antigen receptors on T and B cells made?
V(D)J gene rearrangement
What is positive selection and negative selection?
Positive selection is when the antigen receptor recognises self antigens weakly (good).
Negative selection is when antigen receptors bind strongly to sell antigens (bad). These cells are then eliminated through apoptosis.
What is the difference between thymus dependent antigens and thymus independent antigens?
Thymus dependent antigens are dependent on T helper cells to induce antibody production (e.g. proteins)
Thymus independent antigens don’t depend on T helper cells to induce antibody production (e.g. polysaccharides and lipids)
