What can be used to help when taking an adapted technique x-ray?

Foam pads; Sandbags; Ceiling Suspended Tube; Rise and Fall Table; Vertical Bucky/Image Receptor; Relative/Carer/Staff Member

What is common problems with an AP CXR?
A
- The patient may slump to the side
- May be rotated
- Patient could be Kyphotic
- Chin / Head overlying apices

What are common problems when doing an adapted elbow x-ray?
A
- Patient not keen/ unable to straighten the elbow
- The patient may be unwilling to move the elbow

What are common problems with Adapted Hip Imaging?
A
- Femoral Head may not be visible
- Incorrect Angle of the Patient
- Unaffected Leg not raised high enough.
- Posterior aspect of the proximal femur could be cut off

What are common problems with Adapted Shoulder Imaging?
A
- Patients can ‘hunch’ shoulders when in pain
- The humeral head may appear like a ‘light bulb’ due to internal rotation
- Patient head may also projected over the humeral head

What should be considered when using adapted techniques?
A
- Realise the patients limitations
- Good Communication is vital
- Think about the relationship between the patient, the image receptor and the primary beam
- Use aids when necessary
- Be aware of radiation protection
