Adaptations of Plant leaves Flashcards
Large Surface Area (Leaf)
-Increased surface area for the diffusion of Carbon Dioxide
-Absorption of light for photosynthesis
Thin
-Carbon dioxide diffuses into the Palisade Mesophyll Cells quicker
Chlorophyll
-Absorbs light energy so photosynthesis can take place
Network of veins
-Transport of water to the cells of the leaf
-Carbohydrates from the leaf for photosynthesis
Stomata
_Allows Carbon Dioxide to diffuse into the leaf
-Allows Oxygen to diffuse out
Epidermis is thin and transparent
-More light reaches palisade cells
Thin cuticle made of wax
Protects the leaf without blocking sunlight
Palisade cell layer at top of the leaf
-Maximises the absorption of light
-Light will hit the chloroplasts directly
Spongy Layer
- Contains internal air spaces
-Increasing surface area for diffusion
Vascular Bundles
Thick cell walls in the bundles help support the stem and leaf
