Adaptations, interdependence and competition Flashcards
Define the word habitat
The place where an organism lives
Define the word population
All organisms of 1 species in a habitat
Define the word community
All the populations of different species in a habitat
Define the word ecosystem
The interaction of a community of organisms with the non living parts of their environment
Describe the resources that organisms compete for
Plants compete with each other for light and space they also compete for water, mineral ions and soil
Animals compete with each other for food, water, mating partners and territory
Define and give examples of abiotic factors
Abiotic factors are non living factors in an environment
- Moisture levels
- Light intensity
- Temperature
- Carbon dioxide levels for plants
- Wind intensity
What are biotic factors ?
Biotic factors are living factors in an environment
e.g. animals, birds, plants, fungi, and other similar organisms.
Describe the biotic factor competition
Competition - 1 species may outcompete (Means they are better are getting the resources they need to survive) another so that the numbers are too low to breed.
So it means 1 of the species will decrease in population
Describe the biotic factor New predators
A new predator could cause decrease in prey population
Describe the biotic factor Availability of food
If there is less food available the population will decrease
Describe the biotic factor new pathogens
A new pathogen ( cause diseases) could quickly decrease the population
