Adaptation and Inheritance Flashcards
What can cause the extinction of a species?
Destruction of habitat, changes to environment, new disease, new predator.
Why are scientist developing gene banks?
Trying to stop animals from becoming extinct. Some animals are very important to their ecosystem.
What graph would you use to show discontinuous data?
Bar chart.
What are two factors that cause variation in organisms?
Environmental and Inherited factors.
What is continuous data?
Data that could have any value. (eg. Height)
What happens in seed banks?
Dried seeds of plants are stored at low temperatures
What are the four types of gene bank?
seed banks, tissue banks cryobanks pollen banks
What graph would you use to show continuous data?
Line graph or scatter graph.
What happens in cryobanks?
A seed or embryo is preserved at very low temperatures, normally in liquid nitrogen; sperm and egg cells from animals can also be stored in this way.
What happens in tissue banks?
Buds and other cells from plants are stored
How many chromosomes are found in a human cell?
46 (23 pairs)
What is discontinuous data?
Data that can only have certain values. (eg. Eye colour)
How many chromosomes are found in a human egg or sperm cell?
23 (half as many as any other type of cell)
What happens in pollen banks?
Pollen grains are stored
