AD4 Flashcards
What are similarities and differences between organisms a result of?
Similarities: Having a common ancestor
Differences: Result of natural selection adapting them to different environments
What is an example of a cue that predicts future conditions?
The temperature butterfly pupa form in affects the wing colouration- different for the wet and dry season
What is an example of a cue that determines normal development?
In some insects a blood meal stimulates the production of vitellogein which is a necessary component of eggs
What is an example of changes in spatial expression in birds?
- BMP4 protien instructs cells to destroy webs
- BMP inhibitor in ducks stops cell death
- Therefore giving them webbed feet
What is an example of a mutation in insects causing morphological change?
Ubx mutated gene represses the dll gene in the abdomen which is essential for leg formation- therefore insects don’t have legs on their abdomens
What 3 things can morphological changes result from?
1) Mutations in genes which regulate development
2) Changes in spatial expression of developmental genes
3) Changes in temporal expression of developmental genes
What set of genes provide anterior and posterior information in both mammal and insect embryos?
Hox genes
What is Evo-devo?
Genetics and embryology
