What is acute stress disorder?
an anxiety disorder that occurs in the weeks after a traumatic event.
Typically occurs within one month of a traumatic event. Lasts 3 days-1 month.

What causes acute stress disorder?
experiencing, witness or being confronted with a traumatic event
the events create intense fear, horror or helplessness
Who is at risk for acute stress disorder?
anyone can develop ASD after traumatic event but increased risk if…
- hx of same
- hx of ASD or PTSD
- hx of certain types of mental problems
- hx of dissociated sxs during traumatic event
What are the sxs of acute stress disorder?
Dissociative sxs: feeling numb, detached or being emotionally unresponsive, reduced awareness of your surroundings, derealization, depersonalization, dissociated amnesia
reexperiencing the traumatic event
Avoidance
Anxiety/increased arousal
Distress
What is derealization?
occurs when your environment seems strange or unreal to you
What is depersonalization?
thoughts/emotions don’t seem real or don’t seem like they belong to you
What is dissociative amnesia?
occurs when you can’t remember one or more important aspects of the traumatic event
Tx for acute stress disorder?
- emotional support
- CBT
- BB: limit hyperarousal
- +/- mood stabilizers
- Diphenhydramine: improving sleep
- SSRIs
Describe obsessive-compulsive disorder
presence of obsessions, compulsions or both
obsession-recurrent/persistent thoughts urges or images that are experienced that are unwanted and caused marked anxiety or distress. Individual tries to ignore such thoughts
compulsions-repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the ind. feels driven to perform in response to an obsession. these are aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety/distress but are not connected in a realistic way
ex. of obsession leading to compulsion?
- arranging items symmetrically to prevent harm to a loved one
- showering for hrs daily
Functional consequences of OCD?
- reduced QOL
- high levels of social and occupational impairment depending on sxs severity
- impairment due to time spent obsessing/performing compulsions
- avoidance can restrict functioning
What are some common themes in OCD?
cleaning, symmetry, forbidden or taboo thoughts, harm, hoarding behaviors w/ fear of discarding objects
Common obsessions
contamination, safety, doubting one’s memory, fear of committing a sin, need for symmetry, unwanted/intrusive thoughts
Common compulsions
clearning/washing
checking
arranging objects
touching/tapping objects
hoarding
confessing/seeking reassurance
list making
