Acute Periodontal conditions Flashcards
What are the early clinical signs of ANUG?
- Necrotic lesion initially in papilla then progressing to gingival margin.
- Punched out appearance.
- Spontaneous bleeding
What are the characteristics of advanced lesions in ANUG?
- Lack of deep pockets
- Merging of papillary and marginal involvement.
- Characteristic foetor
- Crater formation of necrosis.
- White membrane
What is the microbiology etiology of ANUG?
- Treponema
- Selenomonas
- Fusobacterium
- Prevetella intermedia
What is the treatment of ANUG?
- Remove bacterial load and necrotic tissue
- No anti-biotics!
- Rinse with 3% hydrogen peroxide.
What are the characteristics of Gingival abscess? Treatment?
- Involves marginal gingiva or interdental papilla
- Trauma
- Vital pulp
- Pain localized
Treatment= removal of noxious agents, drainage, no antibiotics.
What are the characteristics of periocoronal abscess? Treatment?
- Always associated with impacted tooth
- Trauma
- Vital pulp
- Pain localized
Treatment= removal of noxious agents, irrigation under tissue, Systemic complications=antibiotics.
What are the characteristics of periodontal abscess? Treatment?
- Infection of tissue adjacent to periodontal pocket.
- Infection
- Vital pulp
- Pain localized
Treatment=Drainage, Scaling root planing, perio surgery, antibiotics if systemic complications, extraction.
what are the characteristics of periapical abscess? Treatment?
- Infection of dental pulp remnants and tissue surrounding apex of the tooth.
- Infection
- Pulp NON vital
- Pain Severe and non localized.
Treatment=Removal of tooth, root canal.
What is the prevalence of periodontal abscesses?
- Most often in PD > than 5 mm
- More prevalent in diabetes patients.
- Most common in molars.
