A

Abnormal accumulation of blast cells in the blood marrow and (usually) in the peripheral blood

Significance

A

May be a hematologic urgency (hyperviscosity, leukostasis, sepsis, DIC)
Usually fatal within months without chemo

Causes

A
Idiopathic 
Secondary: MDS
Drugs, chemicals: benzene, chemo
Ionizing radiation: incidence 10x 
Viruses: 
HTLV: T-ALL
EBV: Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin 
HHV-8: B-cell 
HCV: B-cell 

Bacteria: H. pylori
Malaria: Burkitt

A

ALL: Children, 80% of childhood leukemia
More than 85% curable

AML: mainly adults, 80% adult leukemia
